In these last two years we were all forced to appreciate the “pleasure” of the online conferences and meetings. Sometimes, I must confess that there are some advantages in the online meetings, especially for long and boring meetings (at least, you can avoid to spend time to join the meeting … and you can stay more comfortably at home during the meeting!), but

Newsletter #67-2021 2 for events like ECF23, where the crucial point is to meet the community, a mere online participation is absolutely not the equivalent to a living, vibrant and exciting event in presence! For all these reasons, I am really excited for the ECF23 in presence, and I am sure that all the ESIS community will join the event with enthusiasm! After the 2020 with all the events that were organized in remote, in 2021 many events were organized by National Groups and by Technical Committees with a “blended” approach. As far as I know, they were all successful, although the number of the participants in presence was often quite limited! However, I think that this confirms how our community is able to adapt to the different conditions, finding always new ways to offer to our members new occasions to meet … at least virtually! Another important news concerns the possibility for non-European countries to join ESIS. We have the first candidate and soon, according to our Statutes, the Council will analyse the candidacy. Concerning Procedia Structural Integrity, I am pleased to confirm that we have a CiteScore (1.4 in 2020 and a 2021 CitescoreTracker value of 1.9, updated to November 2021). Although some events in 2021 have been cancelled or postponed, in the last twelve months we published other six issues… and other issues will be soon online:  Issue 28: 1st Virtual European Conference on Fracture - VECF1 https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity/vol/28/suppl/C  Issue 29: Art Collections 2020, Safety Issue (ARCO 2020, SAFETY) https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity/vol/29/suppl/C  Issue 30: IX Eurasian Symposium on the problems of strength and resource in low climatic temperatures (EURASTRENCOLD2020) https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity/vol/30/suppl/C  Issue 31: 4th International Conference on Structural Integrity and Durability, ICSID 2020 https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity/vol/31/suppl/C  Issue 32: XXIIth Winter School on Continuous Media Mechanics https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity/vol/32/suppl/C  Issue 33: 26th International Conference on Fracture and Structural Integrity https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity/vol/33/suppl/C We are grateful to the Guest Editors and to the Authors for the success of this editorial initiative. In order to encourage TCs and National Groups to take advantage of this option, ESIS confirms the support of part of the publication costs (1500 euros as ESIS contribution to Technical Committees and National Groups). In 2022, hoping in a “normal” year, we hope that all our initiatives will find your appreciation and will be successful. A new initiative will involve our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/EuropeanStructu ralIntegritySociety With more than 1700 subscribers and more than 1600 published videos, it is an important and innovative publishing platform. Well, the ESIS Executive Committee decided to assign to each video a DOI, in order to improve their usefulness and their visibility. The DOI assignment procedure will proceed gradually, but we think that in a few months all the videos will have their own DOI. Always focusing the publishing services offered by ESIS, I wish to remember the ESISPublishing House (ESIS-PH). Based on the OMP/PKP platform (Open Monograph Press | Public Knowledge Project), its mission is to offer to all the ESIS members, to the ESIS Technical Committees and to the ESIS National Groups, the possibility to publish online, and completely free of charge, technical publications, monographies (both in English and in National Languages), scholarly editions (both in English and in National Languages), Ph.D. thesis and edited volumes. All the volumes will be available on the platform with a CC-BY license (completely free of charge for the readers) and all the volumes will have their own ISBN code (if requested). For each category of publication, the reviewing procedures are described in the ESISPH website (https://www.esis-ph.eu/). The service is active and, please, do not hesitate to submit your works! ESIS members have many advantages: Support for publication: - The four Elsevier journals affiliated with ESIS: Engineering Failure Analysis, Engineering Fracture Mechanics, International Journal of Fatigue and Theoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics (https://www.structuralintegrity.eu/site/even ts/journal). We encourage all the ESIS members to submit their papers in these journals. In addition, special issues are often organized by ESIS events organizers. A list of

Newsletter #67-2021 3 special issues is within the pages of this Newsletter. - Open Access journals affiliated with ESIS: at the moment, two OA journals respect the conditions defined by the ESIS ExCo, but we are always open to new submissions. https://www.structuralintegrity.eu/site/event s/journal-2 - Procedia Structural Integrity (published by Elsevier, but directly coordinated by ESIS). Born in 2016, thirty-three issues have been published up to now. The journal is indexed in Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar and now it has also a CiteScore! https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/proce dia-structural-integrity - The new ESIS Publishing House (ESIS-PH): https://www.esis-ph.eu/index.php/eph ESIS WebTV (https://www.esis.tv/): - ESIS YouTube channel offers more than 1600 video recordings of the presentations of the last ESIS Summer Schools and ECF events with more than 1700 subscribers!! (http://www.youtube.com/c/EuropeanStructu ralIntegritySociety) - Live Stream: we offer the support to the events organizers to live stream their online events; - WebTV: focus on…: We offer the focus on some events as “on demand” videos. Updates: - ESIS NEWSLETTER: it is sent every six months to all the ESIS members thanks to the work of Valery Shlyannikov, who also follows the publication of the special issues in the four international journals affiliated with ESIS. - ESIS NEWS: it is sent (more or less) monthly. - Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ESISweb/ - Telegram channel: t.me/ESISweb - Twitter: https://twitter.com/ESIS_web - ESIS Calendar, with all the events organized by the ESIS Technical Committees, by the ESIS National Groups and all the events that could be of interest for the ESIS Community. In order to coordinate the dates and avoid conflicts, we suggest to TC and National Group Chairs to coordinate their meetings with the Vice President Aleksandar Sedmak. All the events are available in the ESIS Google calendar: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed ?src=esisweb.org%40gmail.com&ctz=Europe %2FRome ESIS Blog on imechanica: Our blogger, Per Ståhle, has reviewed many papers from Engineering Fracture Mechanics. We have an agreement with Elsevier which allows open access of these papers for six months. Hence, everyone can have access to them and join in the discussion on the blog. We welcome your comments which may be posted on the blog: http://imechanica.org/node/9794 Google Workspace Account: ESIS activated an agreement with Google. All the ESIS members receive (completely free of charge) the credentials for an "improved" Google account, for example with a Google Drive of 30 Gb instead of the standard 15 Gb (the value of this service is about 50 euros per year). Many new services are active in the Google Workspace (e.g., Classroom, that is really useful for the organization of Summer Schools) and other services are improved if compared to the "standard" Google services. Here you can find some details: - Google Classroom: https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/?hl= en#topic=6020277 - Google Sites: https://gsuite.google.com/learningcenter/products/sites/get-started/ - Google Drive: https://gsuite.google.com/learningcenter/products/drive/ More details are available in the Google Learning center (https://gsuite.google.com/learning-center/) It is important to underline that with the activation of the Google Workspace account, each ESIS member: - automatically guarantee that he/she will not misuse the account; - understand that he/she is not authorized to send emails using the @structuralintegrity.eu account as ESIS. These Google Workspace accounts allowed us to activate some new services: - Each Technical Committee has now its own “miniwebsite”, with the possibility to directly update the information. - For each Technical Committee, a shared Google Drive folder is active. Filling the FORM and joining the TCs (one or more, it doesn't matter!), each ESIS member is able to share his/her publications (in the pre-print format), giving them more evidence, and each ESIS member will be always updated about the papers published by the other TC members on the topics of his/her interest (and, obviously, about the TC activities).

Newsletter #67-2021 4 ESIS-TC subscription FORM: http://www.structuralintegrity.eu/site/activity /tc-subscription How to share your papers in G Drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6daTFbjjZI 5RG9VTnZMZzNfbkU/view?usp=sharing - In order to be always update about the activities organized by the ESIS Technical Committees of your interest, now the ESIS members can join the mailing lists managed directly by the TCs Chairmen. The procedure is really simple. The ESIS member has only to select the TC of his/her interest in the list he/she will find in all the ESIS NEWS we send monthly (also more than one!). Finally, I would like to encourage you to join ESIS. In the ESIS website www.structuralintegrity.eu you will find different possibilities, starting from the “Individual membership” (30 euros). In the ESIS website you can find the list of the advantages of being an ESIS member … I can confirm you that, thank to your continuous support, we are a successful Society! The Conference was supported by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia. The support is gratefully acknowledged. Željko Božić Hungary NDT Integrity Engineering course in Hungary Having recognized that NDT competence and skills are increasingly needed to respond to current and future technological development in ensuring long term integrity of high-performance engineering structures, a new profession – NDT Integrity Engineer and consequently a new university discipline – was developed. NDT integrity engineering combines materials science with fracture mechanics to engineer a nondestructive evaluation process to safeguard the integrity of materials and structures through the use of advanced NDT practices. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, and the Hungarian Association for NDT launched a two-semester postgraduate course on NDT Integrity Engineering in 2020. The course was new in Hungary and missing at international level as well. The students attended were practitioner engineers from the industry, the academic institutions and NDT service providers. The lectures were delivered by leading professors of the university and recognised engineers from the industry, many of them members of ESIS Hungarian Chapter. In completing the laboratory exercises, firms interested in both NDT technology development and service provision took part. The core part of the course dealt with NDT / NDE including the physical bases of the major methods; the application areas of the various methods and their limitations; the elements of NDT reliability; the early detection of materials degradation; the structural health monitoring; the impact of the development of information technology and micro- and nanoelectronics; modelling and simulation; and NDE 4.0. Another part of the subjects focused on materials science related issues including the potential failures associated with manufacturing; the „material’s responses” to loading and environment and their effect on the component integrity. The remaining portion of the subjects covered the loading and environmental condition related knowledge, i.e. awareness of the physical fields arising in the component during operation; the basics of analytical and numerical methods of their calculations; fracture mechanics and the overall structural integrity assessment. The entire course was characterized by an approach having safety, reliability and risk in the focus. At the end of the course the participants were asked to provide their opinion unanimously. The overall opinion was quite positive that we published in page 66 of the Hungarian periodical Anyagvizsgálók Lapja (J. of Material Testers). avilap_2021_iii.pdf . Peter Trampus Israel The 10th ISIG (Israel Structural Integrity Group) Symposium October 5th, 2021 The annual symposium of the ISIG, the Israeli Chapter of ESIS, was held this year in collaboration with the Association of Engineers and Architects in Israel (AEAI). The aim of this Symposium is to bring together specialists in mechanics and micromechanics of materials, applied mathematics, continuum mechanics, materials science, physics, biomechanics and medical engineering to discuss latest developments and trends in characterisation and testing protocols for biomedical materials as well as biological tissues and organs (both in vivo and in vitro), constitutive equations of their behaviour and advanced numerical simulation schemes. Vadim V. Silberschmidt TC15: Structural Integrity of Additively Manufactured Components The European Conference on the Structural Integrity of Additively Manufactured Materials, ESIAM, was founded in 2017 and first held in Trondheim, Norway 2019. The conference has been organized under the umbrella of ESIS TC15. This year in September a virtual conference has been organized. ESIAM21 constituted the second conference in the ESIAM series, where we could see several advances in fatigue design and lifetime prediction for AM metals, both on the test geometry as well as on the component level. Despite the online nature of the ESIAM21 conference this year, there were more than 150

Newsletter #67-2021 16 participants from 25 countries represented. The event was planned to be held in Vienna, Austria, where University of Technology would have been kind enough to serve as hosts. However, it was decided two months before the event, that it had to be organized as virtual event due to the impact of the delta variant. We thank our Austrian friends and contributors for their hard work that was unfortunately not made visible due to this decision, which we all regret. A new symposium of TC15 will be organized in Madeira during ECF23 and hopefully ESIAM23 will be again an in presence event. (http://www.ecf23.eu/TC15_symposium.pdf) Filippo Berto
