In these last two years we were all forced to appreciate the “pleasure” of the online conferences and meetings. Sometimes, I must confess that there are some advantages in the online meetings, especially for long and boring meetings (at least, you can avoid to spend time to join the meeting … and you can stay more comfortably at home during the meeting!), but

Newsletter #67-2021 2 for events like ECF23, where the crucial point is to meet the community, a mere online participation is absolutely not the equivalent to a living, vibrant and exciting event in presence! For all these reasons, I am really excited for the ECF23 in presence, and I am sure that all the ESIS community will join the event with enthusiasm! After the 2020 with all the events that were organized in remote, in 2021 many events were organized by National Groups and by Technical Committees with a “blended” approach. As far as I know, they were all successful, although the number of the participants in presence was often quite limited! However, I think that this confirms how our community is able to adapt to the different conditions, finding always new ways to offer to our members new occasions to meet … at least virtually! Another important news concerns the possibility for non-European countries to join ESIS. We have the first candidate and soon, according to our Statutes, the Council will analyse the candidacy. Concerning Procedia Structural Integrity, I am pleased to confirm that we have a CiteScore (1.4 in 2020 and a 2021 CitescoreTracker value of 1.9, updated to November 2021). In order to encourage TCs and National Groups to take advantage of this option, ESIS confirms the support of part of the publication costs (1500 euros as ESIS contribution to Technical Committees and National Groups). In 2022, hoping in a “normal” year, we hope that all our initiatives will find your appreciation and will be successful. A new initiative will involve our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/EuropeanStructu ralIntegritySociety With more than 1700 subscribers and more than 1600 published videos, it is an important and innovative publishing platform. Well, the ESIS Executive Committee decided to assign to each video a DOI, in order to improve their usefulness and their visibility. The DOI assignment procedure will proceed gradually, but we think that in a few months all the videos will have their own DOI. Always focusing the publishing services offered by ESIS, I wish to remember the ESISPublishing House (ESIS-PH). Based on the OMP/PKP platform (Open Monograph Press | Public Knowledge Project), its mission is to offer to all the ESIS members, to the ESIS Technical Committees and to the ESIS National Groups, the possibility to publish online, and completely free of charge, technical publications, monographies (both in English and in National Languages), scholarly editions (both in English and in National Languages), Ph.D. thesis and edited volumes. All the volumes will be available on the platform with a CC-BY license (completely free of charge for the readers) and all the volumes will have their own ISBN code (if requested). For each category of publication, the reviewing procedures are described in the ESISPH website (https://www.esis-ph.eu/). The service is active and, please, do not hesitate to submit your works! All the ESIS members receive (completely free of charge) the credentials for an "improved" Google account, for example with a Google Drive of 30 Gb instead of the standard 15 Gb (the value of this service is about 50 euros per year). Many new services are active in the Google Workspace (e.g., Classroom, that is really useful for the organization of Summer Schools) and other services are improved if compared to the "standard" Google services. These Google Workspace accounts allowed us to activate some new services: - Each Technical Committee has now its own “miniwebsite”, with the possibility to directly update the information. - For each Technical Committee, a shared Google Drive folder is active. Filling the FORM and joining the TCs (one or more, it doesn't matter!), each ESIS member is able to share his/her publications (in the pre-print format), giving them more evidence, and each ESIS member will be always updated about the papers published by the other TC members on the topics of his/her interest (and, obviously, about the TC activities).

Newsletter #67-2021 Petro V. Yasniy, Eulogy The university and the ESIS communities suffered a great loss. On November 13, 2021, the University Rector, Ph. D of Engineering Sciences, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored master of science and engineering of Ukraine, co-chairman of ESIS TC13 (Education and Training), Yasniy Petro Volodymyrovych has passed away. Petro Volodymyrovychy’s life was entirely devoted to science and his native university. He was an example of constant development and scientific growth. Due to his own experience the institution of higher education grew from Ternopil State Ivan Puluj Technical University into Ternopil Ivan Pyluj National Technical University. Thanks to his ambitions, education and professionalism, he was able to reach professional and scientific success. Petro Volodymyrovych Yasniy was an active member of the ESIS community, being co-chairman of the ESIS Technical Committee 13 (Education and Training). Petro Volodymyrovych Yasniy was born on August 12, 1952 in the village of Kutyshche, Brody district, Lviv region. In 1973 he graduated from the Ternopil branch of the Lviv Polytechnic Institute on specialty "Technology of mechanical engineering, metal-cutting machines and tools" with honors. In 1973-1974 pp. he was an engineer-technologist and senior engineertechnologist of Uzhhorod Machine-Building Plant. After serving in the army since 1975 he worked as engineer, junior researcher and senior researcher of the research sector of the Ternopil branch of the Lviv Polytechnic Institute. In 1977-1980 he studied as the post-graduate student of the Institute of Strength Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Kyiv. After graduating from post- graduate course in 1980 he worked at this institute as a junior researcher, and since 1983 as a senior researcher. From 1992 he worked at the Ternopil Instrument-Making Institute (now - Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University), starting from the Head of Materials Science Department, Vice-Rector for Research (1993-2007 pp.) to the Rector of Ternopil Ivan Puluj National Technical University (from 2007 p.). He defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate (1980) and Doctor of Engineering Sciences (1990) in "Mechanics of Deformable Solids". He was awarded the title of senior researcher (1985) and professor (1996). He has published more than 300 scientific papers, including 6 monographs and 18 patents for inventions. He has published 4 scientificmethodical manuals, including one with the stamp of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. SCOPUS has published more than 100 of his scientific papers. He prepared 15 Candidates and 1 Doctor of sciences, he was the scientific supervisor of four post-graduate students. In 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2019 he took scientific internship at IFMA and the Institute Pascal of Clermont Ferrand and Sigma Clermont (France). Scientific works of P.V. Yasniy, who made a significant contribution to the development of scientific principles for diagnosing the strength and durability of materials and structural elements, are characterized by relevance, originality of approaches, novelty, argumentation of the results and their implementation in applied development and engineering practice in leading metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine. Newsletter #67-2021 National Committees Croatia Croatian Structural Integrity and Durability Group Report on ICSID 2021 https://icsid2021.fsb.hr/ 5th International Conference on Structural Integrity and Durability 2021 (ICSID 2021) and Summer School „Fatigue and Fracture Modeling and Analysis“, were organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Zagreb, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from September 6 - 10, 2021. Being globally hit by the COVID19, the ICSID 2021 Conference was organized in a “Hybrid Mode”, with one third onsite participants and two thirds online participants. The combination of on-site and online presentation guaranteed the maximum safety and conveniences for participants. Virtual participants attended the Conference online via the Zoom platform. ICSID 2021 and the Summer School were held at the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies in the city of Dubrovnik. The magnificent old building of the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies (CAAS) is situated in the center of Dubrovnik on the Croatian Adriatic Coast, in the vicinity of the most prominent historical places of the Old Town. Centre for Advanced Academic Studies in Dubrovnik (CAAS) Summer School „Fatigue and Fracture Modeling and Analysis“, was organized prior to the ICSID 2021 conference, from September 6 - 7, 2021. The Summer School provided an opportunity for students, researchers and engineers from academia and industry to get acquainted with fundamental aspects of fracture mechanics, recent trends in practical applications of fatigue and fracture models, and advanced approaches such as multiscale materials modelling. Senior researchers and experts, distinguished scientists in the field, gave lectures on experimental and numerical techniques for modelling, analysis and assessment of damaged components and structures. Examples on linear and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics models, damage mechanics models and multiscale modelling used for fatigue, fracture and failure analysis of structural materials and components were presented. Newsletter #67-2021 9 The Summer School was attended by 15 participants from 9 countries, 6 onsite and 9 online participants. We got excellent feedback from the participants regarding the lecture topics and the Summer School organization in general. International Conference on Structural Integrity and Durability 2021 (ICSID 2021) was held in the Centre for Advanced Academic Studies in Dubrovnik from June 7 - 10, 2021. The ICSID 2021 conference managed to bring together about 65 participants from 26 countries from around the world. to discuss how to characterize, analyse, predict and asses the fatigue and fracture of structural materials and components. ICSID 2021 was a forum for discussion of the present and future trends in experimental, analytical and numerical fracture mechanics, fatigue, structural integrity assessment, failure analysis, and other important topics in the field. Accepted page abstracts, were published in the Book of Abstracts with an ISBN number (ISSN 2584-3907). Conftool Conference Management System has been used for participants and manuscript administration. The full papers will be published in Procedia Structural Integrity. Željko Božić Hungary NDT Integrity Engineering course in Hungary Having recognized that NDT competence and skills are increasingly needed to respond to current and future technological development in ensuring long term integrity of high-performance engineering structures, a new profession – NDT Integrity Engineer and consequently a new university discipline – was developed. NDT integrity engineering combines materials science with fracture mechanics to engineer a nondestructive evaluation process to safeguard the integrity of materials and structures through the use of advanced NDT practices. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, and the Hungarian Association for NDT launched a two-semester postgraduate course on NDT Integrity Engineering in 2020. The course was new in Hungary and missing at international level as well. The students attended were practitioner engineers from the industry, the academic institutions and NDT service providers. The lectures were delivered by leading professors of the university and recognised engineers from the industry, many of them members of ESIS Hungarian Chapter. In completing the laboratory exercises, firms interested in both NDT technology development and service provision took part. The core part of the course dealt with NDT / NDE including the physical bases of the major methods; the application areas of the various methods and their limitations; the elements of NDT reliability; the early detection of materials degradation; the structural health monitoring; the impact of the development of information technology and micro- and nanoelectronics; modelling and simulation; and NDE 4.0. Another part of the subjects focused on materials science related issues including the potential failures associated with manufacturing; the „material’s responses” to loading and environment and their effect on the component integrity. The remaining portion of the subjects covered the loading and environmental condition related knowledge, i.e. awareness of the physical fields arising in the component during operation; the basics of analytical and numerical methods of their calculations; fracture mechanics and the overall structural integrity assessment. The entire course was characterized by an approach having safety, reliability and risk in the focus. At the end of the course the participants were asked to provide their opinion unanimously. Peter Trampus Israel The 10th ISIG (Israel Structural Integrity Group) Symposium October 5th, 2021 The annual symposium of the ISIG, the Israeli Chapter of ESIS, was held this year in collaboration with the Association of Engineers and Architects in Israel (AEAI). Due to the Coronavirus pandemic restrictions in Israel, the symposium was held on October 5, 2021, by Zoom. During the symposium, 14 experts from the field of Structural Integrity from both the academia and industry gave talks on various topics related to structural integrity, fracture mechanics and failure analysis. More than 60 participants, including academic staff members from different universities, engineers, students and postdoctoral fellows attended the symposium, and according to their opinion the event was a nice success. Dov Sherman Italy Italian Group of Fracture (IGF) activites In 2021, IGF (Italian Group of Fracture) organized the 26th International Conference on Fracture and Structural Integrity (https://www.igf26.eu/) in “blended” version, both in presence, in the wonderful venue of of the Valentino’s Castle in Turin and online. During the conference, José António Fonseca de Oliveira Correia (University of Porto, Portugal) was awarded with the Manson-Coffin IGF medal, Liviu Marsavina (University Politehnica Timisoara, Romania) was awarded with the Paolo Lazzarin IGF medal and Giuseppe Andrea Ferro (Politecnico di Torino, Italy) was awarded with the IGF Honorary Membership. Finally, Filippo Berto was elected as new IGF President for the 2021-2025 years. Silberschmidt TC15: Structural Integrity of Additively Manufactured Components The European Conference on the Structural Integrity of Additively Manufactured Materials, ESIAM, was founded in 2017 and first held in Trondheim, Norway 2019. The conference has been organized under the umbrella of ESIS TC15. This year in September a virtual conference has been organized. ESIAM21 constituted the second conference in the ESIAM series, where we could see several advances in fatigue design and lifetime prediction for AM metals, both on the test geometry as well as on the component level.
